Seismic & Wind Restraint Engineering
Stress Free Seismic Restraint
Since 2006 Seismic compliance with section 4.1.8.18 “Elements of Structures, Non-Structural Components and Equipment” has been a standard part of commercial construction projects.
While the process should be fairly straightforward and streamlined by now, there is still potential for it to cause additional stress and potentially hold up occupancy.
Capital Seismic specializes in the design of seismic restraints for all kinds of commercial, residential, institutional, and industrial projects. We cover any size of project, retrofit, or new construction from the installation of a single fan or light to full buildings and large industrial projects with equipment in excess of 100,000 lbs.
With the release of the 2020 National Building Code and the 2024 Ontario Building Code the spectral acceleration in many areas has been substantially increased. This means areas that did not recently require restraint and certification may now require it. This includes:
St Catharines, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Oshawa, Downtown Toronto, Kingston, Brockville, Perth, and Carleton Place.
If you’re starting a project in any of these areas please contact us and we can confirm if a full seismic review is required.
Wind Restraint
With the effects of climate change we’re seeing an increase in damage and risk of harm due to increased wind activity.
Capital Seismic designs the restraint of exterior equipment to the higher of the wind or seismic force to always ensure equipment will not move.
If your project is in an area where seismic is not a concern but wind loading is please feel free to reach out to us for wind only restraint for exterior equipment including emergency generators, roof top units, condensing units, chillers and more.

What do we mean by Superior Service?
Response Time
The construction industry is a fast paced environment and our customer response time reflects that.
On-site
With team members on the road most days we can typically be at your site within 48 hours. All site personnel have WHIMIS, Working at Heights, and typical security clearance.
Accuracy
Generic designs are effective for small, standard equipment but more challenging projects can require a custom 3D drawing based on site conditions.
Cost effective
We aim to be very cost-effective by avoiding overkill and effective project management.
